The thing is, the white working class did not elect your average Republican. It elected a demagogue and a protest candidate. I see this as a problem with both parties in the US, but especially of the Democrats. At the bottom of this entire mess were economic issues and anxieties, and had the Dems done their job better and sold their results better, they might have had the presidency - and maybe the Senate.
